Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg
CEO

Facebook is one of the giants of the Internet today. But its founders may not have dreamed of this success when they started building it from scratch in their university dorm room. The original purpose of Facebook, or "The Facebook" as it was known then, was to allow Harvard students to use their ".edu" email addresses and photos to connect with other students at the school.

Then-student Mark Zuckerberg foresaw a way of bringing the existing social experience of college onto the Internet. He wanted to create a place that could help college students connect with one another. The site was an immediate hit, and within just 24 hours of launch, around 1,200 students had signed up. Within one month, around half of all Harvard undergraduates had a profile.

Instagram

Adam Mosseri
CEO

Instagram currently features the world’s largest deployment of the Django web framework, which is written entirely in Python. We initially chose to use Python because of its reputation for simplicity and practicality, which aligns well with our philosophy of “do the simple thing first.” But simplicity can come with a tradeoff: efficiency. Instagram has doubled in size over the last two years and recently crossed 500 million users, so there is a strong need to maximize web service efficiency so that our platform can continue to scale smoothly. In the past year we’ve made our efficiency program a priority, and over the last six months we’ve been able to maintain our user growth without adding new capacity to our Django tiers.

Snapchat

Evan Spiegel
CEO

Snapchat is a popular messaging app that lets users exchange pictures and videos (called snaps) that are meant to disappear after they're viewed. It's advertised as a "new type of camera" because the essential function is to take a picture or video, add filters, lenses or other effects and share them with friends.

Snapchat uses a wide range of languages to bring out the best of it. Bootstrap and Javascript are blindly used for front-end development. Many other development languages such as Python, Objective-C (iOS), Cocoa Touch and PHP are immensely used to build this popular Snapchat app.

After researching some information about what programming language does Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat used. I gained some few knowledge where all those apps started. My thought about them using similar programming language was changed. I thought all apps are the same as how they were made. I also found out what programming language was mostly use to make an app and I realized the big contribution of programming language in any social media we used. I was amazed how Facebook and Snapchat especially the Instagram was made. Instagram come up with the “do the simple thing first” but their simplicity bring them to the max level where Instagram are known as one of the used apps in the world. Most people do not care on how an app was developed but when they started to have an interest about that I’m sure they were like me who really want to know more. As of now I only have a little knowledge about the programming language and needed wide information to finally understand it, but this information helped me a lot to pursue what I really like.
